Notes

Francois Armand Caillaux Spolier was born Francois Amand in France, yet he used the name Armando only in Peru. He was contracted to go and work in Peru by a French Company at the age of 18 for three years. He was a trained gold gilder by profession. He was apparently commissioned to repair alters and picture frames in the churches in Peru, his contribution to these works can still be found in Arequipa and other parts of Peru. It is believed he worked on the altar and the picture frames in the church La Compania in Arequipa, while he lived there with his family, as well as on the devil in the pulpit in the cathedral in Arequipa. Francois was blond with blue grey eyes. He left France on a ship which took 4 months to arrive to Peru. The documents below in French, show these details. It is believed that perhaps he finished his 3 year contract and then stayed in Peru, settling in Arequipa after being in Lima. He married Magarite, who was born in Peru, and they had 5 children. Armand lost his wife Margarite when she was aged 29, from birth complications after her last son Luis was born. Three of their 5 children, Eduardo, Luis & Amelie later immigrated to Chile, perhaps with one of their grandmother, yet reasons are unknown. Armand also had 2 other sons in Peru that we currently are aware of. They were were Luis Caillaux Fernandez with Tomasa Fernandez and Vincent Alberto Caillaux which he fathered at 49 with Jesus Velasco. Armand has given us a wonderful big beautiful family, if only he knew that we are all getting to know each other via this site and now Facebook. Armand travelled very much and it is believed he was mining in La-Oroya with some Americans and he died there. It is a city currently of about 33,000 people on the River Mantaro in central Peru. He is believed to have been buried there and when his grandson Hector Caillaux Vizcardo y Guzman went to find his grave, he was told that a land slide has since washed away all graves of that time. Some of the sculpting and gold guilding restorative works he is believed to have participated in Arequipa are shown below, taken in 2006 at Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus and the devil in the pulpit in the Cathedral in Arequipa.
