He failed the entrance exam at Polytechnique, but this did not prevent him from becoming member of the Sarthe, Finance Minister, Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
Also father of Paul Caillaux (1864-1900.
Alumni from Polytechnique (promotion 1841; released in 1845 ranked 12 out of 118 students) and the Ecole des Ponts et Chauss�es. It then belonged to the Corps of Bridges and Roads.
He was a practicing engineer in regular service bridges (Laval and Le Mans) until 1862, then became chief engineer at the Cie des Chemins de fer de l'Ouest.
He lead the construction of railways in Sarthe, where he became an MP in 1871 (center-right group Allain Targ�.
He was Minister of Public Works from 1874 to 1876 in the government of Cissey and supported the construction of railway lines and construction of ports in(Dunkirk, Calais, Boulogne, St-Nazaire.
He became senator of the Sarthe from 1876 to 1882 and Minister of Finance in the government de Broglie in 1877.
Supporter of the right monarchist, he voted against the Jules Ferry laws on education.
He was president of the company of Paris-Lyon-M�diterran�e (PLM) from 1891 to his death in Paris.
